Naoko formed Shonen Knife in Osaka. The name of the band comes from a name of a pocket knife she found.
In 1983, releases Burning Farm from indie label Zero Records. The album gets its American release from American indie label K Label in 1985. The unique sounds of the band gains popularity in the US, UK, and Europe, and in 1992 the band achieves major label debuts in Japan, US, and the UK. Since then, the band continues to release albums and tour the world.
The band in 2007 consists of the founder Naoko and the drummer Etsuko who officially joined in 2006. Bassists are added as a support member for live shows.
Even in this day and age of Japanese musicians gaining popularity abroad, a Japanese band as popular worldwide as Shonen Knife is very rare.
The music of Shonen Knife is defined by founder Naoko's sensibilities based on the punk, new wave, and hard rock movements of the 70s and 80s. But her unique lyrics are in a world of their own.
Shonen Knife will incorporate anything that sparks their interest into their music, and make it their own. Naoko's keen sense of melody and ironic lyrics, and the band's policy of never selling out have won the love of fans worldwide.
